there alone on a side street off Euclid sporting a borrowed American flag that was as big as me, when Ozzie and Harriet Nelson and troop strolled by and decided to make camp a few yards away. The children whined and crabbed and simply couldn't understand what they were doing there. Ozzie, a vet himself, isolated to one side while Harriet dragged out a Frigidaire's worth of goodies to appease her fidgety clan. They crunched and munched, leaving a mountain of peanut shells and garbage on the freshly swept street. Next to a cooler lay their abandoned little American flags ON THE SIDEWALK-a crime akin to Communism in my youth! I wanted to say something. "Pick up those flags!" I wanted to scream, but I couldn't remember if it was a crime or a sin to let them touch the ground. (Catholic school has so many rules-years later it's hard to keep them all straight.) But I never yelled. I thought if I had a submachine

gun handy, I'd mow the whole lot of 'em down right there on the spot. Yet, I'm trying to curb my tendency to overreact, so it's best I only brought a flag, a comb and my bus transfer.

Currently, I am the self-appointed caretaker of the one-block radius around my apartment building and, in all humility, must admit that I'm doing one helluva job de-trashing this site. From cigarette pack cellophanes to bank-inthe-box slips, no piece of refuse is safe from my watchful eye. And you know, I think it all makes a difference. My litter, your whales, the planet, our rights. I think it all counts for something. Particularly if it's done out of genuine concern instead of anger at the "other guy" for not doing it first. For me, I know I've already made a difference in my neighborhood. Aside from the litter, the streets are cleared of pedestrians as well. The Nelsons have taken to hiding in their homes, lowering the lights and parting the curtains to peek, tempering their gratitude with comments like, "There goes Ms. Litter" and "What a nut!" I could take it to heart. But I know they're just jealous. ▼
